Yeah, yeah, sex sells, and I enjoy seeing skin as much as anyone else, but how much is too much? And when does it become more about the models and less about the cars?
You go to any car show and you see them--import models. You open up pages of a magazine and you see them--more import models. It leaves me wondering do people even care about the cars anymore? After all, when a model poses with her legs spread all over the hood, it makes it a little difficult to see the car.
It's disgusting to think of it really. While working at an HIN show a few years back, I found myself staring at the Asia Diva booth--staring not so much at the models, but more so at the people going crazy for pictures--middle-aged men taking photos of semi-clothed ladies, young enough to be their daughters. It didn't take a genius to figure out that they weren't really there for the cars.
While I understand that models have always been a part of the scene and always will be, I often wonder what becomes of these young ladies. The more popular ones such as Sasha Singleton and Ursula Mayes develop a following; others like Tila Nguyen and Kaila Yu are fortunate enough score record deals. But what about the other 99.9% of the models out there? Modeling can only last so long, and unless you're one of the lucky handful, it appears to be a dead end job. So what compels so many women to implant themselves with silicone or saline and pose nearly naked to the ogling pleasures of men and prepubescent boys? I don't get it. Free t-shirts surely aren't the price of human dignity.
All in all, I'm glad to represent HT. While we have one page dedicated to models, we try to keep it classy. For 99% of the magazine, it's still about the cars.
